Lead the future of the quantity surveying profession in New Zealand

The New Zealand Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NZIQS) is the leading professional body representing more than 6,500 quantity surveyors, estimators, and cost professionals across New Zealand and internationally. NZIQS plays a critical role in shaping industry standards, supporting professional development, and influencing the future direction of the construction and infrastructure sectors.

This is an opportunity to take on a high-impact national leadership role, working closely with the Board to guide the profession through a period of change, growth, and increasing industry relevance.

The Opportunity

As Executive Director, you will be responsible for:

  • Providing leadership for delivering NZIQS’s strategic direction
  • Driving membership growth, engagement, and value
  • Ensuring strong financial performance and sustainability
  • Leading a capable and committed team to deliver excellence
  • Strengthening NZIQS’s influence across government and industry

You will work at the intersection of strategy, governance, industry advocacy, and member leadership, shaping both the organisation and the profession it represents.

ROLE DETAILS

Position Title:            Executive Director

Reports To:               NZIQS Board via the Chair

Direct Reports:          Accounts Manager, Membership Manager, Member Services Administrator, Events Manager. Communications Manager

Location:                    Wellington, New Zealand

Role Type:                 Permanent, Full-time

Travel: Occasional national and international travel is required to attend branch meetings, conferences, industry engagements, and international professional forums.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND ATTRIBUTES

The successful candidate will ideally bring a combination of the following:

Experience

  • Proven leadership experience within a membership organisation, professional body, industry association, or related sector.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and managing a small, high-performing team.
  • Proven success in strategic planning, organisational leadership, and operational management.
  • Sound financial and commercial management expertise including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, and audit oversight.
  • Experience working collaboratively with Boards and governance structures.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and advocacy experience across government, industry, and member environments.
  • Experience developing partnerships, sponsorships, and strategic collaborations.

Skills and Attributes

Desirable Qualifications

  •   Understanding of the New Zealand membership and professional association environment would be beneficial.
  • Relevant qualification in business, management, professional services, membership associations or a related discipline.
